The Neurological Society of India joins the neurosurgical community across the world in mourning the passing of Professor Mahmut Gazi Yaşargil, who died at the age of 99, just one month before what would have been his 100th birthday celebration. The passing away of Prof Yasargil is truly end of an era.
Born on July 6, 1925, in Turkey, Professor Yaşargil’s has been a master innovator, teacher, neurosurgeon, educator, and an inspirational figure. Widely hailed as the Father of Modern Neurosurgery, he was aptly chosen as Neurosurgeon of the Century (1950-2000) by the Journal Neurosurgery.
Professor Yaşargil’s legacy will endure for generations to come. The techniques he developed, the instruments he created, and the principles he established continue to save lives daily in operating rooms around the world.
The Neurological Society of India remembers Professor M. Gazi Yaşargil with gratitude for what he has done for the Neurosurgical world. He has transformed Neurosurgery with his immense efforts, and transformed the way Neurosurgery is done, thereby improving the lives of countless patients worldwide. Every microneurosurgical operation performed across the world carries his imprint.
NSI deeply mourns the passing away of Prof Yasargil, and prays that his family, students, admirers, and loved ones have the fortitude to bear with the loss.
